St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk - Laplace Office

The St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk of Court operates two offices to serve both sides of the parish. The East Bank office is located in Laplace at 1811 West Airline Highway and serves as the primary location for most residents of the area. This is where district court records for east bank cases are filed and maintained. The West Bank office is located in Edgard and serves the communities across the river.

For Laplace residents, the Airline Highway office is the right place to go for court records, certified copy requests, and in-person document review. The clerk holds civil case files, criminal dockets, domestic records, succession filings, and mortgage and conveyance records for the parish. Staff can search by name, case number, or other identifying information to help you find what you need.

Both the East Bank and West Bank offices issue certified copies of birth certificates as well. Importantly, birth certificates are available only with cash payment, and the fee is $34.00 per copy. This is a notable local rule worth knowing if you plan to request vital records at the same time as court records.

40th Judicial District Court in Laplace

The 40th Judicial District Court serves all of St. John the Baptist Parish. Its East Bank courthouse is located at 1020 Cambridge Drive in LaPlace, which is also known as the Arcuri Center. This courthouse handles the full range of district court matters, including felony criminal cases, major civil suits, domestic relations proceedings, and successions.

If you are looking for records from a case that was heard in district court, the documents are filed with the St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk, not kept separately at the courthouse. The clerk and the district court are closely connected, but the clerk is the official records custodian. Court hearings happen at the courthouse, but the paper trail lives with the clerk.

The 40th JD falls within the 5th Circuit Court of Appeal. Appeals from district court decisions in Laplace and St. John the Baptist Parish go to the 5th Circuit, which sits in Gretna.

Searching Laplace Court Records Online via Clerk Connect

St. John the Baptist Parish court records are accessible online through Clerk Connect, the statewide portal that aggregates records from multiple Louisiana parishes. Clerk Connect lets you search by name, case number, or other parameters and view docket entries for civil and criminal cases filed with the parish clerk.

Clerk Connect is available at clerkconnect.com and is one of the most straightforward tools for finding Laplace court records without a trip to the Airline Highway office. The portal is updated regularly, and document images are available for some case types.

Clerk Connect portal Louisiana court records multiparish search

Clerk Connect covers civil and some criminal case records. If you need official certified copies of documents found through the portal, you will still need to contact the clerk's office directly, either by mail or in person. Online viewing through Clerk Connect does not replace the need for certified copies in legal proceedings.

Under La. R.S. 44:31, any person may request to inspect or copy public records. The clerk must respond to written requests in a timely manner. Denials must be in writing and cite the applicable law that justifies withholding the record.

Note: Older records that were never digitized may only exist in paper or microfilm form at the clerk's office. Clerk Connect covers records from recent decades but may not include very old filings.

Laplace Court Records - What They Cover

Through the St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk, you can find a broad range of court documents tied to the Laplace area and the wider parish. Civil records include contract and debt disputes, personal injury cases, property claims, and civil judgments entered by the 40th JD. Criminal records cover felony charges, misdemeanor matters elevated to district court, guilty pleas, verdicts, and sentences.

Domestic relations records include divorce decrees, child custody orders, and support judgments. These records are part of the public file unless a court has sealed them. Succession records document the transfer of a deceased person's estate and are filed with the clerk when the estate goes through the court system rather than being settled privately.

Under La. R.S. 44:32, public records must be made available during normal business hours. A reasonable fee may be charged for copies. Looking at records without copying them at the clerk's public terminal is generally free of charge.

Judgment records are useful for verifying whether a monetary judgment has been entered against someone in St. John the Baptist Parish. Judgments can result in property liens, and the clerk's records show whether the judgment is still active or has been paid off.

Referrals are available by phone or online, and initial consultations are often offered at a low cost. For self-represented filers, the clerk's staff can explain the filing process but cannot give legal advice on your specific situation.
